Dr. Vance grew up in Greensboro, NC. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill on a prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship. While at UNC he had the opportunity to discover a passion for medicine during summer internships at the largest free clinic in the US, the Venice Family Clinic, as well as volunteering at a hospital in northern India. Following college, he attended the UNC School of Medicine on a full merit Blanchard Carolina Family Loyalty Fund Scholarship. As a medical student, Dr. Vance was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society, and won a national student research award from Academy Health.

He completed his dermatology residency at New York Presbyterian - Columbia University Medical Center. During his time as a resident, Dr. Vance also spent several months each year working with veterans at the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx. After residency, Dr. Vance completed a fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has published in Dermatologic Surgery, the leading academic journal for dermatologic surgeons, and co-authored a book chapter on cutaneous malignant neoplasms in an otolaryngology textbook.

Dr. Vance is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology in Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery.
